Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is a first-person shooter that concludes the rebooted Modern Warfare sub-series. Developed by Infinity Ward and released on October 23, 2026, the game places players in a conflict sparked by a North Korean invasion of South Korea, with additional operations spanning New York, Paris, and Mumbai. It runs on PlayStation 5 with support for advanced controller features including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on grounded combat that emphasizes precise aiming and fluid movement. A new Ballistic Authority system integrates weapon handling, audio cues, visibility, and battlefield awareness to create consistent gunplay across encounters. Players control characters like Private Park during frontline operations and follow Captain Price in parallel missions that mix large-scale battles with more intimate objectives.
Campaign missions shift between trench warfare, urban close-quarters fights, vehicle chases, and night raids. Multiplayer emphasizes tactical decision-making with maps designed for varied sightlines and engagement ranges. The extraction-focused DMZ mode requires players to enter contested zones, complete objectives against AI and rival squads, secure loot, and extract successfully while managing risk and inventory space.
Game Modes
Three primary experiences define the title. The single-player campaign delivers a linear story across multiple global theaters with set-piece moments and squad-based objectives. Competitive multiplayer launches with twelve core 6v6 maps plus dedicated Gunfight arenas and larger-scale Big War environments that support vehicle combat and infantry pushes.
DMZ operates as a persistent extraction shooter in a South Korean exclusion zone centered on Hajin. Players deploy solo or in small teams, navigate dynamic threats, complete contracts, and decide when to extract with collected items. Additional multiplayer variants include standard respawn modes, round-based tactical options, and large-scale formats such as Combat Outpost that expand traditional domination across expansive battlegrounds.
Multiplayer Systems and Progression
Multiplayer features a refined movement system that rewards positioning and timing over excessive speed. Day-one content includes a mix of small, medium, and large maps with distinct visual and tactical identities. New modes such as Inflation and Collateral introduce fresh scoring and loadout mechanics that blend elements of existing formats with buy-phase decisions.
Progression tracks operator unlocks, weapon customization, and prestige levels. Hardcore rulesets limit the HUD and remove health regeneration for players seeking stricter conditions. The modular Kill Block facility reconfigures between rounds to alter routes and sightlines dynamically.
Current State and Support
The game launched with a full suite of modes and has received ongoing seasonal content focused on DMZ expansions and map rotations. PlayStation 5 versions leverage 120Hz support, variable refresh rates, and enhanced visuals on compatible hardware for responsive performance during intense firefights.
Is It Worth Playing?
Modern Warfare 4 appeals to players who value a complete package of story-driven single-player content, competitive multiplayer, and extraction gameplay in one release. The campaign stands out for its scale and narrative closure, while DMZ offers repeatable sessions with meaningful risk-reward choices. Multiplayer delivers a measured pace that suits those who prefer deliberate engagements over chaotic movement.
Those seeking a focused first-person shooter experience with strong production values and multiple distinct ways to play will find the title aligns with that preference. Availability on PlayStation 5 ensures access to platform-specific features that enhance immersion during both solo and online sessions.
