MASH Commander is a strategy, indie, RPG, and simulation game set during the Korean War in 1951. Players step into the role of a MASH battalion commander just south of the 38th parallel, managing medical care, staff assignments, resources, and camp conditions under wartime pressure.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on triage and patient management. The player decides treatment priorities while monitoring blood volume, internal bleeding, and distress levels to keep soldiers alive during waits for care. Supply points accumulate for camp upgrades or added comforts, while influence points allow requests for favors from higher command or nearby units through a telephone switchboard interface that supports multiple channels but risks static interference that reduces influence.
Staff management forms another key layer. Leadership roles go to personnel reviewed through the clerk and command offices based on performance metrics. Morale fluctuates according to the balance of stress and stamina across the camp population, influenced by survival rates, front-line proximity, meal quality, camp conditions, policies, and weather. Higher morale improves work efficiency and helps medics maintain composure during high-pressure periods.
Medical staff share general skills, with most holding specializations and damage-type focuses that improve through repeated use or point investment at level-ups. An extensive in-game documentation system provides contextual help, including expanded training modules that break down the tutorial. Stress relief options include various activities for the commander and camp staff. A weather system affects stamina, wound types, maintenance needs, and supplies, currently featuring dynamic clouds and one season with limited wind and temperature impacts. Affinities allow camp members to form friendships and groups over time, which affects command decisions since morale spreads through social connections. Traits shape how individuals spend free time and perform as workers, tying directly into the affinities system.
Game Modes
MASH Commander delivers its experience through a single-player management simulation focused on the day-to-day operations of a frontline medical unit. No separate multiplayer or alternate modes appear in the current build. The gameplay emphasizes ongoing decision-making around patient care, resource allocation, personnel assignments, and camp oversight within the Early Access version.
Setting and Development
The game places players in Korea during 1951 after the Pusan Perimeter stabilizes and Seoul returns to allied control. The previous commander has gone absent without leave, leaving the player to assume command of the battalion. All assets stem from manual creation: sprites and textures made in Windows Paint3D or Blender, most models built in Blender or assembled from primitives in Unity, with a few based on community Paint3D assets. Sound effects were recorded and mixed personally using a Zoom portable studio and Blender, while the switchboard static and certain interface sounds came from LeshySFCreator. Music was composed and mixed in MuseScore Studio 4. No artificial intelligence tools generated in-game art, textures, or models except for the silver eagle logo, and no AI code assisted development.
Is It Worth Playing?
MASH Commander suits players interested in detailed management simulations that combine medical triage, staff oversight, and resource systems within a historical wartime context. Its Early Access status means core mechanics like patient assessment, influence trading, morale tracking, and skill progression are available now, with planned expansions to weather and social systems. The niche focus on MASH operations and the solo developer's emphasis on original assets and sound design appeal to those seeking an authentic, hands-on strategy experience rather than broad action or multiplayer features. Those who enjoy simulation titles centered on decision chains and long-term camp stability will find the most engagement here.
