Cyberpunk 2077 is a single-player open-world action RPG set in the sprawling neon metropolis of Night City. Players take on the role of V, a mercenary navigating corporate intrigue, street gangs, and personal survival while dealing with a powerful biochip implant that connects them to the consciousness of rockerboy Johnny Silverhand. The experience blends first-person shooting, melee combat, hacking, and narrative choices across a detailed urban environment.
Gameplay
The core loop revolves around exploration of Night City's districts on foot or by vehicle, combined with mission-based progression. Combat mixes firearms of various types, close-quarters weapons, and quickhacks that allow remote interference with enemies and systems. Character development centers on five primary attributes that shape available perks and playstyles, alongside cyberware implants installed at ripperdocs to modify mobility, defenses, and abilities. Recent updates refined vehicle handling, added autonomous driving options, and improved enemy responses during pursuits. The Phantom Liberty expansion introduces the Dogtown district along with a dedicated story arc focused on espionage and high-stakes decisions that branch based on player choices.
Game Modes
The game operates entirely in single-player format with no multiplayer components. Progression follows a main campaign structured around key story acts, supplemented by side jobs and gigs offered by fixers throughout the city. Players can approach objectives through direct confrontation, stealth infiltration, or netrunning tactics, with outcomes influenced by prior decisions and equipped cyberware. Exploration remains open at most times, allowing free movement between districts while completing tasks at a chosen pace. The expansion integrates its content seamlessly into this structure rather than functioning as a separate mode.
Story and World
Night City serves as the central setting, populated by megacorporations, criminal organizations, and ordinary citizens whose interactions drive the narrative. The story follows V's rise and the complications introduced by the biochip, with Johnny Silverhand providing ongoing commentary and influence. Phantom Liberty expands this with new characters and a spy-thriller plotline centered on political maneuvering and moral dilemmas. Dialogue trees and quest resolutions adapt to player actions, leading to multiple possible conclusions for the overall tale.
Updates and Current State
Following its initial release, the title received a major overhaul in update 2.0 that reworked progression systems, police behavior, and combat feedback. Subsequent patches through 2.3 and 2.31 introduced features such as improved vehicle AI, additional cars with associated quests, and refinements to photo mode and performance options on current-generation hardware. On Xbox Series X|S the game runs with optimizations including ray tracing support and higher frame rates. Development focus has since shifted toward a sequel, leaving the current version as a finished product with no further large-scale content planned.
Is It Worth Playing?
The bundle delivers the complete single-player experience on Xbox Series X|S, including the base campaign and Phantom Liberty expansion. Reception for the updated version highlights strong narrative delivery, meaningful character customization through attributes and cyberware, and a lived-in open world that rewards different approaches to missions. It suits players who enjoy story-focused action RPGs with branching choices and build experimentation over competitive multiplayer or live-service elements. Those seeking a polished, self-contained adventure in a cyberpunk setting will find substantial content across the main story and side activities. The package represents the definitive version available on the platform.
