Depthforged is an indie RPG with casual and simulation elements available on PC. It centers on a relaxing incremental dungeon crawler where players manage a party of heroes who handle combat automatically while the focus stays on preparation and optimization.
Gameplay
The core loop revolves around forging equipment and arranging it on hero grids. Raw materials turn into weapons, armor, and trinkets at the forge, with each craft carrying a quality roll that players can improve by repeating the process or selling extras. Hundreds of items exist, ranging from basic bone daggers to advanced soulsteel greatswords, and placement on the grid determines outcomes because neighboring pieces trigger effects such as skill growth, quality boosts, or restrictions like requiring an entire row or an empty adjacent cell.
Four heroes form the party, beginning with the Warrior and expanding to include the Rogue, Mage, and Cleric. Each class draws skills directly from equipped gear, producing abilities like fireballs, healing light, falling stars, or rising stone. Building packs around preferred skills lets those abilities activate during fights and fill the screen with effects. Heroes advance on their own during runs, leaving players to refine gear and layouts between zones.
Game Modes
The experience centers on a single continuous descent through 25 zones divided into five acts. These zones include the Barrow under a ruined abbey, the Blighted Wilds, the Frozen North, the Drowned Kingdom, and the Burning Depths. Each zone features dozens of enemies, an elite midway through, and a boss at the end that serves as a progression barrier requiring better gear or adjusted packs to overcome. Players can click during fights to provide direct assistance.
Prestige runs allow players to collect Bloodstones and invest in a skill tree that accelerates future descents. The structure supports both short sessions and longer play, with heroes continuing to fight while the game remains open and no progress occurring when closed. No timers, energy systems, or advertisements interrupt the flow.
Item Crafting and Grid Management
Every item carries unique neighbor interactions that turn each hero's grid into a compact puzzle. Skills scale with matching neighbors, auras enhance surrounding quality, and certain pieces demand specific positioning for full effect. Quality variations on crafts encourage repeated forging attempts, while spares can be sold to fund further progress. This system rewards experimentation without a single correct solution for any pack.
Is It Worth Playing?
Depthforged suits players who enjoy incremental progression and puzzle-like item arrangement over direct combat control. The automatic hero fights paired with deep customization create a low-pressure loop ideal for relaxed sessions. The defined ending through the final boss encounter provides clear closure, while the prestige system adds replay value for those who want faster subsequent runs. Its absence of punitive mechanics makes it accessible for casual playstyles focused on steady advancement and gear optimization.
