You and up to three friends work the floor of a flat-pack furniture store. An order comes in. Someone finds the box (it's on the top shelf, so someone else gets the forklift), you open it, lay out the parts, and build the thing from one set of instructions that only one of you can be holding.
There's one screwdriver. There's one hammer. The screws are colour-coded, and a wrong one fits fine until the customer picks the thing up. Then it falls apart at the counter, in front of them.
Store policy is no returns allowed.
What you do
Fetch the order. Find the right box in the racks. If it's up high, someone has to drive the forklift.
Read the instructions. One booklet, tiny print. Whoever holds it calls out the steps, if they can find the magnifier.
Build it. Snap the parts on, put the screws in by hand, then fix it with the one screwdriver or the one hammer. Somebody always has it.
Carry the big stuff together. Wardrobe sides need two people. Walk it through the aisles without hitting anything.
Face the customer. Impatient, perfectionist or big spender, they all check your work. A wrong screw shows.
Mr Pips is watching
Your manager, Mr Pips, sends memos. Targets go up. The lights go out to save electricity. There are surprise inspections. Orders change halfway through. Returns arrive anyway.
