Palimpsest Idle is an idle action-RPG set on the page of an illuminated manuscript. Players begin with a single weapon in the Wilds and advance through thirty-five zones across seven biomes to reach the Void Observatory. Every enemy, weapon, and piece of armor appears as hand-drawn manuscript art on parchment, and combat revolves around tapping to strike while building permanent power through loot and upgrades.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on tapping to deal weapon damage, with crits, super-crits, and multistrike echoes creating bursts of output. Clearing monsters quickly charges the stage boss, which appears once enough foes fall. Defeating the boss unlocks the next stage and can carry momentum forward through multiple levels at once. Loot drops from enemies and feeds into the Forge, where the Calligrapher permanently improves affixes or rewrites unwanted ones. Players recycle unwanted gear into Pigment to fuel further upgrades.
Thirteen gear slots support six rarities from Pulp to the rare Palimpsest tier. Affixes cover flat bonuses, percentage multipliers, and weapon procs such as bleed, poison, and drain. An eighteen-weapon catalogue spans six archetypes, each with distinct growth curves. The Arsenal system lets drafted weapons fight independently, leveling through Pigment to gain damage, rarity, and affixes. Rerolls adjust growth grades when needed.
Ascension resets the current run while banking Ink as permanent currency. This opens two uncapped tracks: Scriptures that provide broad multipliers to offense, ailments, defense, and the Arsenal, and Footnotes that offer targeted perks for attributes, find rate, or recycle yield. Gear carried through Ascension retains all Forge modifications.
Game Modes
The experience remains single-player throughout, with built-in options for active or passive play. Tapping provides direct control during combat, while the Auto Pen enables fully automatic tapping along a finite Ink track. Auto-Advance moves the player between stages without input, and offline progress continues earnings when the game is closed. Auto Equip applies per-slot scoring rules so upgrades select themselves based on chosen priorities.
Progression focuses on a single continuous climb through the zones rather than separate competitive or cooperative modes. The Ledger tracks combat metrics with per-source damage breakdowns, and detachable windows allow custom layouts for monitoring systems. The Codex serves as an in-game reference for every mechanic.
Progression and Customization
Weaponmancy allows drafting custom weapons that join the Arsenal and operate autonomously. The Forge and Pigment system encourage experimentation with affix combinations across the six rarity tiers. Ascension builds long-term power through random Scripture acquisition and direct Footnote purchases, creating layered multipliers that persist across runs.
Seven biomes contain 353 unique hand-drawn enemies and lead to the final Void Observatory. Reaching the end typically requires twenty to thirty hours for most players, after which Ascension provides unlimited further advancement. Sound effects come from royalty-free sources, and an original score accompanies the entire journey.
Is It Worth Playing?
Palimpsest Idle suits players who enjoy incremental progression systems combined with active tapping and deep gear customization. The single-player offline design removes any need for constant attention or external connections, and the absence of microtransactions or timers keeps focus on the build-crafting loop. Those who appreciate manuscript-style visuals, permanent upgrades through Ascension, and the ability to switch between manual combat and true idle play will find a self-contained experience that rewards experimentation with weapon archetypes and affix combinations. The game runs entirely on local files with no network requirements, making it accessible for extended sessions or background progress.
