Just Cause 4 is a third-person action-adventure game set in an open-world sandbox environment. Players control Rico RodrĂguez as he navigates the fictional South American nation of SolĂs, a region spanning diverse biomes from rainforests and deserts to snowy peaks. The core loop revolves around traversal, combat, and large-scale destruction using a wingsuit for gliding and base jumping, paired with a fully customizable grappling hook that supports multiple tether types.
Gameplay
The gameplay emphasizes physics-driven interactions in a 100-square-kilometre world. Rico deploys his wingsuit to soar across landscapes while wind and particle systems influence flight paths during extreme weather events such as tornadoes, lightning storms, sandstorms, and blizzards. These conditions create dynamic hazards and opportunities, with wind volumes affecting objects and player movement in real time.
The grappling hook serves as the central tool for creative problem-solving and stunts. It supports three primary modifications that players can mix across loadouts: a retractor for pulling objects together, airlifters that attach balloons to lift targets skyward, and boosters that propel attached items with rocket thrust. These allow attachment to vehicles, structures, enemies, or environmental objects to engineer chain reactions and improvised weapons. Supply drops provide on-demand access to additional gear during play.
Combat involves a wide array of firearms, each with alternate firing modes, alongside melee options and vehicle-based engagements. Rico can call in allied AI support during fights against the Black Hand, a high-tech private military force. The game features a frontline system where rebel forces clash with Black Hand units along territorial borders, enabling players to join ongoing skirmishes at any time. Vehicle handling covers military jets, helicopters, turbo sports cars, and construction equipment, all integrated with the same physics rules that govern tethering and weather effects.
Game Modes
Just Cause 4 operates entirely as a singleplayer experience focused on story progression and open-world freedom. The campaign unfolds through main operations tied to the central conflict, interspersed with region strikes that involve weakening enemy positions to expand control and unlock further story content. Side activities include targeted missions that grant specific grappling hook upgrades, encouraging experimentation with tether combinations across different loadouts.
Beyond structured missions, the open world supports unstructured play through exploration of settlements, rural areas, and urban zones. Players can engage in spontaneous destruction, vehicle stunts, or weather manipulation without following objectives. Heat mechanics draw enemy responses during aggressive actions, scaling the intensity of Black Hand pursuits in real time.
Story and Setting
The narrative centers on Rico's arrival in SolĂs to investigate his father's past involvement with the Black Hand and the Illapa Project. Gabriela Morales leads the Black Hand as its commander, serving as the primary adversary with a background in military training and ruthless enforcement of the organization's goals. Allies such as Mira Morales assist in forming the Army of Chaos to challenge the regime. The story explores themes of rebellion and hidden history while players liberate territories and confront extreme weather phenomena tied to the project.
Is It Worth Playing?
Just Cause 4 delivers consistent sandbox mayhem through its physics systems and traversal tools, appealing to players who enjoy experimenting with destruction and creative stunts in a singleplayer open world. Reviews from the 2018 release period highlighted the scale of weather-integrated physics and tether customization as strengths, while noting dated combat and occasional technical issues. The Reloaded version bundles additional content and updates, making the full package available on Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles. It suits those seeking extended sessions of chaotic, self-directed action rather than linear storytelling or competitive multiplayer. Player counts on digital platforms remain steady years after launch, indicating ongoing interest among fans of the series' style.
