MUSTER is a strategy indie RPG roguelite built around Minesweeper-style deduction on PC. Players excavate hidden tiles to assemble a warband, equip it with loot, and send it into automated battles across procedural layouts. The core loop combines careful number-based clue reading with risk assessment as monsters and prizes occupy the same tiles.
Gameplay
The excavation system forms the heart of each run. Revealing an empty tile displays a number that indicates how many of the eight adjacent tiles contain either a monster or a prize. Overlapping clues allow deduction of safe paths, while flags serve as personal markers for uncertain tiles. Digging is restricted to tiles adjacent to already opened ground, though limited shovels permit breaking new fronts elsewhere on the board. Lanterns provide a safe inspection of buried tiles without triggering their contents.
Careless digging risks waking connected groups of monsters. Buried glints signal trapped diggers who can be freed by clearing surrounding tiles. Eight distinct roles are available for recruitment, each with unique positioning and abilities. The Barrow Widow tanks at the front, the Bone Fletcher strikes from range, the Torchbearer applies burning effects, and the Grave Alchemist sustains allies. Every role features a class quest and three talent trees that award points upon completion, allowing permanent shaping of each digger within a single run.
Game Modes
Standard runs consist of six floors divided between two distinct barrows. The earthen barrow serves as the starting area. Victory on the first barrow unlocks the frozen barrow, which introduces different room layouts, enemy compositions, and bosses. In the frozen barrow, certain enemies begin visible and encased in ice that advances with each dig. Freeing an enemy early grants initiative, while continued digging allows the ice to determine the encounter timing.
Barrow selection and difficulty level are chosen independently once both areas are unlocked. Every generated floor undergoes solver verification before play begins, with rerolls applied if logical deductions reach an impasse. This ensures boards remain solvable through deduction alone, though limited lanterns offer assistance when clues prove insufficient to resolve all uncertainty.
Warband Building and Loot
Successful battles yield coin and gear drops in four rarity tiers. Weapons focus on offensive capabilities while charms emphasize defense. Surviving diggers carry wounds into subsequent floors, and a loss consumes one of three available grit points before returning the player to the same floor with the current state preserved. This persistence adds weight to positioning decisions during the automatic hex-grid battles that follow deployment across four zones.
Equipment and talent choices interact directly with battle outcomes. A Long Spear, for example, enables attacks over the front line held by the Barrow Widow. Post-battle reports detail damage dealt, healing performed, damage taken, and active effects, providing clear feedback for adjusting future deployments.
Is It Worth Playing?
MUSTER suits players who enjoy blending logical puzzle solving with roguelite progression and light RPG customization. The Minesweeper foundation demands careful reading of clues amid shared monster and prize indicators, while the warband system rewards thoughtful role selection and talent investment. Automatic battles shift focus from moment-to-moment control to pre-fight positioning and build decisions.
The game remains in Early Access, with two barrows and eight recruitable roles currently available. Controller support with remappable actions is included. Those drawn to deduction-heavy strategy games that incorporate risk management and incremental character shaping will find the core systems engaging. The procedural layouts and solver-checked boards maintain consistency across runs without relying on external progression systems beyond the run itself.
