Task Bar Dungeons is an indie dark-fantasy idle RPG for PC that runs in a compact window on the desktop. Players assemble a party of three heroes who battle automatically while the user works or steps away. The game emphasizes build customization, idle progression, and a planned player-driven economy through material trading after launch.
Gameplay
Three heroes fight endless hordes without direct player control during combat. The user selects the team, assigns skills, and adjusts builds before sending the party into stages. Heroes level up, collect loot, and advance on their own even when the game window is collapsed or pinned on top. Idle progress continues for up to eight hours after closing the application. Off-duty heroes appear in a living village where they walk paths, visit the smithy, and interact with villagers.
Each of the six heroes offers two specializations that alter weapons, skills, and party roles. Every specialization includes four skills, a passive ability, and a talent tree with fifteen nodes plus four skill upgrades. Heroes reach level 100 and can be rebirthed for permanent bonuses. The Locksmith opens one chest every ten minutes regardless of whether the game runs. A Blacksmith forges and upgrades gear to +5, while a Smelter converts unwanted items into materials such as iron ingots, essence, and embers.
Enemies include shamans that heal packs, shield bearers that protect allies, bombers that explode on death, and pack leaders that frenzy their groups. Act bosses such as the Faceless Bellringer, the Funeral Marshal, and the Lord of the Veil strike the entire party and enrage when the fight drags on. Materials gathered through play form the basis of the planned Steam Community Market economy, while earned weapons and armor remain bound to the player who obtained them.
Game Modes
The campaign begins in Normal difficulty. Completing it unlocks Hard, and finishing Hard unlocks Hell. Three acts structure the progression, each ending with a pack leader mini-boss that may drop a chest and an act boss that always drops one. Boss encounters feature multiple phases that demand attention to party composition and timing.
Supporter Pack heroes Reyna and Noxa expand options for those who purchase them, adding Kunai Skirmisher / Blade Dancer and Abyss Witch / Dawnkeeper specializations. Planned post-launch updates include a new hero each month with fresh specializations and skills.
Heroes and Builds
Varg serves as a Living Shield or Heavy Crossbowman, bringing raw power to the front line. Mara functions as Guardian or Healer, providing steady defense and support. Rook operates as Marksman or Beast Master with a loyal bear companion. Sera excels as Battle Mage or Fire Summoner, delivering spectacle through fire and summons. Reyna and Noxa, available via Supporter Pack, add agile skirmishing and dual-aspect magic respectively. Switching specializations changes weapons, skills, and party roles, allowing dozens of distinct party combinations across the twelve total options.
Is It Worth Playing?
Task Bar Dungeons suits players who enjoy idle progression systems and desktop companion games. The free-to-play model includes no energy system or pay-to-win elements, with all core content accessible through play. The compact window design allows the party to advance during work or other activities without demanding constant attention. Planned trading of materials on the Steam Community Market and monthly hero additions provide long-term goals once the game launches in June 2027. Those seeking active combat control or immediate multiplayer features may find the automated battles less engaging, while fans of build experimentation and passive advancement will appreciate the depth of talent trees and specialization choices.
