ShardStriders is a co-op action roguelike RPG in Early Access on PC that centers on short, intense runs through procedurally shifting environments called Shards. Players enter these fractured realms alone or with up to five others, battling waves of enemies that grow tougher and alter their behavior mid-encounter while pursuing powerful Keepers at the end of each expedition.
Gameplay
The core loop revolves around 15 to 30 minute runs where every attempt begins from scratch yet carries forward permanent progression through a shared Core. There are no fixed classes. Instead, skills appear as choices during combat, and each selection permanently influences the character for that run. Players collect weapons and armor pieces that carry unique affixes, properties, and rarity levels. These items can be looted from enemies, purchased from merchants, enchanted for further customization, or traded among party members.
Synergies emerge naturally from combining skills, artifacts, and relics. A single run might emphasize close-quarters crowd control with heavy armor and area abilities, while another favors ranged attacks supported by mobility tools and elemental effects. The Shard itself reacts to the party's composition, adjusting enemy behavior and environmental rules to match the challenge. Loot management matters: strong pieces stay equipped, weaker ones sell or pass to companions, and a shared stash supports ongoing development across runs.
Game Modes
ShardStriders features a single primary mode built around repeated expeditions into individual Shards. Each Shard operates under its own set of rules that can shift during a run, forcing adaptation. Players tackle these zones either solo or in online co-op groups of up to six. Larger parties trigger stronger enemy responses, making coordination essential for survival. Reviving downed allies and distributing resources become practical concerns when the Shard escalates its resistance.
Progression ties directly to success and failure alike. Defeating a Keeper advances the overarching goal of restoring the original world by reclaiming Shards one by one. Between runs, collected power feeds the Core, unlocking additional options for future attempts. The system emphasizes replayability through shifting skill pools, item variety, and the scaling difficulty that accompanies bigger groups.
World and Progression
The setting originates from Prystal, a once-unified living crystal shattered by the Sunderer. The resulting fragments each developed independent lands, laws, and guardians known as Keepers. These entities guard fragments of the original power and resist reclamation. Only the First Shard remains intact, serving as the eventual destination after enough Shards are restored.
Between expeditions, players grow stronger through accumulated resources and unlocked content. The developers plan to expand the number of accessible Shards and Keepers throughout Early Access, with the focus placed on deepening build variety rather than simply extending playtime. The current Early Access build already includes the full run loop, skill and loot systems, co-op support, and merchant interactions.
Is It Worth Playing?
ShardStriders targets players who enjoy roguelike structure combined with action RPG elements and meaningful co-op interaction. The absence of rigid classes and the emphasis on mid-run skill choices create flexible builds that reward experimentation. Party scaling adds tension and teamwork incentives not always present in solo-focused roguelikes. Because the game remains in Early Access with an expected development period of roughly one year, the experience will continue to evolve through community feedback on balance and new content.
Those drawn to short, high-stakes runs with persistent progression, loot customization, and optional group play will find the described systems align closely with that preference. The title is not yet released, so prospective players should monitor updates on the Steam page for the official launch into Early Access.
